Twin screw press at Russia

The ASTW Twin Screw Presses have the following advantages:

All parts and surfaces that are in contact with raw material are made from stainless steel.  The frame and gearbox housing is extremely robust and made from steel plates up to 40mm thickness.

The reduction gear box is of brand SEW and is shaft mounted for easy mounting, better reliability and extremely low friction which gives low electric consumption.

The dividing gear is mounted with 6 very large roller bearings in oil bath for high reliability and long lifetime.  The motor has variable speed by inverter and the screws rotate 1 to 5 RPM.

The screens are either 2mm thin screen with 10mm backing plate – or 12mm solid screens that are step-drilled, for raw materials with high bone content.

The raw material for oily fish plants and animal rendering plants must be properly cooked to 95 °C and pressed for good separation to solids – press cake and press water.

The best press in the industry is the TWIN SCREW PRESS that use two intertwined screws that move slowly ( 3 to 5 RPM) in opposite directions and prevent rotation of the raw material.

The press cake solids go to the dryer to make dry meal
The press water liquids (press water) which consist of water and fats must be further separated in a 2 or 3-phase decanter and separated to: fat/oil, stick water, some meat sludge (to dryer).

Note that larger pieces of raw material must first be hogged or pre-broken to about 25mm particle size to ensure better cooking and pressing.

Operating speed should ideally be about 75% of nominal capacity, but the presses can run faster if needed.

High Pressure press (HP press) for rendering

  • The output material from a high temp cooker is free from water but contains all the fat and oil (tallow) that needs to be removed.
  • The HP press will squeeze out most of the fat to reach about 12% remaining fat in the final meal. The input material needs to be heated to 90-95 deg C before pressing.
  • The HP press is an extremely strong and sturdy machine with a large motor drive to cope with the intense friction and wear on the single screw, static hold-back bars and the screen itself.
  • Due to the high wear frequent maintenance and change of wear parts is necessary.
  • The HP press is different from the twin screw press used in the low temp rendering process as the twin screw press squeezes out a mix of water and oil, often 50 to 65% of the cooked raw material input volume. The twin screw press design is also quite different and more light duty, as it is not subject to the high wear and tear as the HP press.
